WZ 2025 — the new activity classification

WZ 2025 replaces WZ 2008 as the Germany version. This page summarises what changes, when it takes effect and how to bridge existing data.

WZ 2025 keeps a 4-digit structure but redefines several activity areas: digital platforms and data centres, renewable energy, circular economy, and the frontier between industry and services. Most codes carry over unchanged; a smaller set is split, merged or renumbered.

FAQ

When does WZ 2025 become mandatory?
WZ 2025 enters legal force in 2025. Most reporting cycles switch immediately; a transition window runs until 2027 so historical series can be re-expressed.
Do I need to renumber my registered activity?
Most codes carry over. If your activity falls in an area that was split or merged, the national register will notify you or publish an automatic mapping.
How does NACEBridge handle both versions?
The converter and the lookup tool expose both the legacy and the new code so you can work with historical partners, EU databases and national filings without losing traceability.
