The CAE — Classificação Portuguesa das Actividades Económicas — is used to describe the economic activity of every entity registered in Portugal, from sole traders to large corporations. Businesses receive one primary CAE and can add secondary CAEs.
The current version, CAE Rev. 3, is aligned with NACE Rev. 2 at the 4-digit class. Portugal will migrate to a Rev. 4 aligned with NACE Rev. 2.1 in step with the wider EU rollout.
CAE codes drive tax filings (via AT), social security reporting, INE's business surveys, and access to sector-specific licences and grants. NACEBridge decodes any CAE into its NACE hierarchy and finds equivalent codes in other EU countries.
