Compreende as atividades de ensaio e análises técnicas de todo o tipo de materiais e produtos para determinar quer a sua composição e pureza, quer a qualificação, fiabilidade e defeitos. As análises e ensaios incidem em vários domínios: qualidade das águas e do ar; higiene alimentar humana e animal (incluindo testes e controlos veterinários relacionados com a fabricação de alimentos); características e comportamento dos materiais (resistência, espessura, durabilidade, radioatividade, etc.); teste às características de funcionamento a equipamentos (motores, automóveis, equipamentos eletrónicos, etc.); testes radiográficos a soldaduras e ligações; ensaios com utilização de modelos ou maquetes (aeronaves, navios, barragens, etc.); ensaios acústicos e de vibração; medição da radioatividade; controle técnico de construções e instalações; e controlo técnico periódico de veículos automóveis para preservação da segurança. Inclui ensaios e certificação de barcos, bens de consumo, aeronaves, recipientes pressurizados, instalações nucleares, gestão de laboratórios de polícia e atividades similares de certificação.
