Branchen omfatter jagt og fældefangst på kommerciel basis samt fangst af dyr med henblik på produktion af fødevarer og pelsværk eller til anvendelse inden for forskning, i zoologiske haver eller som kæledyr. Branchen omfatter også landbaseret fangst af havpattedyr som fx hvalrosser og sæler.
